I've received a few emails about a "new groundbreaking fat loss study" and how it is supposed to burn fat faster than regular cardio (even though we know regular cardio sucks).
Researchers compared...
a) Doing a 60 minute bike (at 60% max effort) then recovering for 60 minutes
vs
b) doing a 30 minute bike, resting 20 minutes, and then doing another 30 minute bike and then resting for 60 minutes. (both rides at 60% max effort).
The results showed...
i) The total calories burned between the workouts did not differ.
ii) more fat was burned during the recovery for the split workout (77% vs 56%).
What does this mean?
Jack squat.
Nothing.
First, why would i even consider doing either of the above when a 20-minute interval workout gets more results?
Second, who is going to do this?
Third, look at the actual numbers of fat calories burned...at most, it could be 50 extra calories. Again, useless in all practical terms.
But...
Look for health clubs to be full of people sitting around for 20 minutes between cardio bouts...maybe clubs will start offering "recovery rooms" where people can sit for 20 minutes and read dry People magazines, instead of the sweat covered People magazines they are used to reading while doing their relatively worthless cardio workouts in the past.
Why am I so hard on cardio?
Because its a waste of time...
and now these researchers and the authors of these "news reports" want to waste even MORE of your life...

A recent study published by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, subjects aged 40 to 75 were instructed to do 60 minutes of aerobic exercise per day for 6 days per week for an entire year.

Given the amount of exercise, you'd expect weight losses of 20, 30 pounds, or more, right?
Well, the surprise findings showed the average fat loss for female subjects was was only 4 pounds for the entire year, while men lost 6.6 pounds of fat over the year. That's over 300 hours of aerobic exercise just to lose a measly 6 pounds of blubber. Not time well spent, in my opinion.
*** Listen, you give 300 hours a year, and you'll lose a lot more than 6.6 pounds of fat...trust me on that. Heck, give me 300 hours a year and I could probably turn you into a Ninja, commercial airline pilot, and accomplished mime, and still help you burn more fat than you would with 300 hours of cardio.
Here's the best advice I can give you...

Fast weight loss diets are not for the faint of heart. They're not based on balanced eating plans. You shouldn't exert yourself when you're on one because they can put stress on your body. Here are three of the most popular fast weight loss diets:
The Three Day Diet is the simplest of the three diets. It consists of an exact menu for three days. Each breakfast is one small amount of protein, one starch, and one fruit. On one day you'll have an egg, 1/2 of a banana, a piece of toast, and black coffee.
Lunch is even less. It's a small amount of protein and a starch. For one lunch you're recommended to have 1/2 cup tuna and a piece of toast along with your black coffee. Dinner is a little different. You will have a larger serving of protein, 2 servings of vegetables, a fruit, and a cup of regular vanilla ice cream. I personally think it's also one of the strangest diets.
However, there are more of these diets that also have their quirks. One is the Chicken Soup Diet. This is based on a complex recipe for chicken soup. You get some choices of different breakfasts, and then you eat as much soup as you want the rest of the day. One breakfast for the Chicken Soup Diet might be Total cereal, nonfat milk, and juice. A different one would be yogurt, fruit, and wheat germ. When it comes to diets for fast weight loss, with the exception of breakfast this one has zero variety and is boring.
The Grapefruit Diet is one of the most intricate of the 3 fast weight loss diets. There's a lot to remember, and it's all considered important. For instance, there's a certain amount of grapefruit or other specified juice to eat with each meal. You're warned not to eat more or less than what's suggested. Otherwise, it's said the diet will not work.
Also, you're not allowed to take anything away from the diet. If you don't want to eat two slices of bacon with your breakfast - too bad. They claim you won't burn fat if you don't adhere precisely to the diet, including eating the bacon. Hmmm.
A diet like this is hard to understand.
You're also advised to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water every day, but only 1 cup of coffee at a meal. Butter can be used as a condiment, or to fry foods. You're only allowed to eat at meal time; no snacking except the beverage at bedtime. You're given two lists: one of foods you can eat and one of foods you cannot eat. Yet, on this "accelerated" weight loss diet you're encouraged to eat until you're full at any meal. Again I say...hmmm.
You're warned not to eat certain foods at the same time they claim the more you eat (of the "allowed" foods), the more you fat you burn. Breakfast on this diet is grapefruit, 2 eggs, and 2 bacon slices. That's the basic guideline however; they also indicate you can eat as much eggs and bacon as you wish. Is this also confusing to you?
Lunch is grapefruit, salad, and meat. Dinner is grapefruit, meat, and a salad or vegetable. You get a bedtime snack of tomato juice or nonfat milk. Yippee! Let's face it - you'll be hungry regardless which of the diets you try. They're extremely restrictive with very, very little food variety. Speaking for myself, that usually means I'll not only be miserable but my chances of sticking to it - even for a short time - are pretty slim. (Pun intended)
And doing fast weight loss diets like this can get complicated. If you do participate in one, please be careful. They may not be safe. And definitely consult with your doctor.

Cut down on soda and other juices as much as you can, preferably not drinking such drinks at all. The usual American gets over 90,000 calories every year from soft drinks alone. These juices have very high sugar levels and they damage the body in more ways than one.
Do not neglect physical exercises. Buy a pedometer and clip it to your belt and aim for an extra 1000 steps per day. Regular exercise is the key to burning calories and maintaining the new obtained weight. A sedentary person takes only 2,000 to 3,000 steps per day and adding another 2,000 to these will prevent you from gaining any more weight. Anything in excess of 5,000 steps each day will help you lose any excess weight.
All easy and fast weight loss diets will eventually make you change your eating habits altogether. Be prepared to give up all the fast food, pizzas or snacks from between the meals. And instead of only one large meal per day, split it into five, six or seven smaller ones. Studies show that if you eat the same number of calories distributed over multiple meals, your body releases less insulin, which keeps blood sugar steady and helps control hunger. In other words all easy and fast weight loss diets should not only balance your weight but they should also adjust your overall health condition. February is heart health month and one of the best things you can do to keep your heart healthy is to make sure you get at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise each day. Walking is a gentle workout that gets your heart pumping enough to keep it strong and healthy. Here are some reasons why walking is such a great way to keep your heart healthy and how you can get started today.
If you have any health concerns, you should of course consult your physician before starting any type of exercise program, including walking. Other than that, it is very simple to start walking for heart health. Put on a pair of comfortable shoes and go for a little walk around your neighborhood. How far and how fast you walk will depend on your current fitness level. Dont overdo it. If you havent exercised at all in recent years, start with a short 10-minute walk after dinner or during lunch. After a week or two, increase your walking time to 15 minutes. Before you know it, you will easily be walking 20 to 30 minutes a day.
The key to walking for heart health is consistency. Go out and walk every day or at least almost every day. Obviously the easiest thing is to go walk outside, but sometimes weather just doesnt permit it. Go window-shopping at the mall instead. Many malls are open to walkers even outside of regular business hours. Check the Mall information counter to see when you can walk in the mall. There may even be a regular walking group you could join.
Becoming a member of a local gym is another option. Almost every gym has several treadmills available for you to walk on. You can also mix up your workout by using an elliptical machine or a stationary bike from time to time. As your body grows stronger, you will be able to enjoy some of the other workout equipment as well and may even end up taking a few classes.
If you find yourself enjoying the treadmill walking, consider purchasing one for your home. Its the most convenient way to get your walking workout in at any time. Set it up in front of a window, or even the TV. You can be walking for heart health while watching your favorite TV shows.
Then there are walking workout DVDs. Check the exercise section of your favorite DVD store for walking DVDs. With most of them you will be walking in place in front of your TV while the DVD plays. The instructor walks you through the workout which usually also includes different step moves and an upper body workout.
