Meditation Technique #6 Sit, Breathe and Relax

When you meditate, take long slow deep breaths. Send the breath deep into your abdomen and then breathe out. Each time you breathe in imagine cleansing energy infusing your body. When you breathe out, ask your body to let go of tension and stress.

Tip: To quiet a busy mind count each exhalation, starting with one going up until ten, then begin the cycle all over again. If you forget where you are, go back to one and begin again. Do this for ten minutes to slow down mental activity. In the beginning many thoughts will come and go. When you notice you are thinking, bring your attention back to your breath. Linger on the peaceful space that lies between your thoughts. In time the space will expand.

Meditation Technique #7 Relax with a Body Scan

A body scan calms your nervous system, releases tension and helps you feel embodied - sometimes we spend so much time in our heads that we forget we have a body. Practicing this exercise for five or ten minutes is a meditation in itself. It's also a wonderful way to settle down before you meditate.

To begin, direct your consciousness to explore your left foot. Feel the physical sensations inside and around your foot. Then move your consciousness up your left leg, to your knee, thigh and into your left hip. Imagine traveling through the arteries, tissues and bones. You might come across energy blocks or areas of numbness. You might feel tingling vibrations, as the cells come alive from your conscious attention. Observe the sensations. Experiment with how you can tell muscles to relax and let go simply by directing your will.

Do the same with the right foot and leg up into your right hip. Direct your awareness to the root chakra area - abdomen and buttocks. Next explore your stomach, heart and chest, traveling up to your throat. Then move down to your left hand, feel the sensations in each of your fingers, and travel up your arm to your left shoulder. Repeat with the right side. Explore your neck and throat; notice how you can relax and expand your throat. Travel into your brain, let your face and jaw relax. Allow the muscles around your scalp, temples and forehead to soften and relax.

Tip: EEG (electroencephalogram) research has revealed that when the forehead, temples and scalp are relaxed, theta activity moves more easily into the frontal cortex. When those muscles relax you are able to go deeper into a meditative state.

Meditation Technique #8 How to Deal with the Mind

Gain the benefits of meditation even if you're a new meditator. Balance your Chakras, become positive and reduce anxiety; strengthen your immune system, and develop your creativity, just by listening to Deep Meditation.

The first goal of meditation is to notice and quiet random thoughts. In his book, Learn to Meditate, David Fontana, Ph.D. says, "By watching your thoughts and learning to identify them as distractions you have begun the path of meditation."

As you practice meditation you'll become aware of how your mind runs around in circles with many different thoughts and memories. At first your mind will be like a chatterbox, shifting from one concern to another, this is natural. You might catch yourself thinking about work or solving problems. You might worry about something that hasn't happened yet or remember things you forgot, like paying your credit card bill.

Meditation Technique #9

Label Your Thoughts Observe the quality of your thoughts and then label them. "These are busy, work thoughts," "These thoughts are negative and limiting," or "Here we go again with my To Do list." Then gently return your attention to your breath and expand into the space between your thoughts.

Each time you identify the quality of your thoughts, you are making enormous strides in meditation that will inevitably unfold in your life. In time you will become a keen observer of your inner world. You'll notice when you've fallen into negative thinking and you'll learn to redirect your attention to thoughts that expand and enhance your sense of self.

The highest level of thought is positive. Positive thoughts soothe your nervous system and encourage states of wholeness and well being. If negative emotions arise, such as anger, regret, fear or sorrow, label them and then gently shift your attention to something positive.

Meditate Upon Your Divine Self

Target Heart Rate: Worthless?

Not long ago, before a severe heat wave struck our region, I got together with a few of my co-workers to play tennis one evening after work. I really love to play tennis even though Ive never progressed beyond the intermediate hacker level.

I do have a few brief flashes of what appears to be a game, but thats usually overshadowed by a host of botched shots, which I like to refer to as unforced errors.

The temperature was in the low 80s and the average age of my colleagues is around 30. At 49, Im the senior citizen in the group, but I felt I could hang with them.

Im not sure if it was the heat or being out of condition, but after about 20 minutes I had to excuse myself and take a breather. I really didnt feel very good and I didnt want to take any chances, but after a 5-minute rest I caught my second wind and played for another hour and a half.

I felt somewhat embarrassed because my co-workers know how fanatical I am about running off to the gym at lunchtime to workout. It also hit home that maybe Im not in very good cardio-vascular shape! It really made me rethink my training regimen.

My first thought was maybe all this emphasis on staying in the fat-burning heart rate zone was really just a false sense of complacency. Maybe what I really needed to be doing was getting my heart rate up much higher and working on improving my cardio conditioning. At least this would be the best way to improve my stamina on the tennis court.

The other harsh reality is that all this so-called fat burning training wasnt really burning very much fat!

Coincidentally, I recently came across an article that discussed a book entitled The Heart Rate Monitor Guidebook by Sally Edwards. She states, The 220 minus your age formula is worthless. She advises that you determine your maximum heart by using the Sub-Max Step Test.

This simple test is performed by stepping up and down on an 8-inch step for 3 minutes without pausing and then taking your heart rate during the third minute. I just did this test today at the gym. I used one of those step aerobic platforms, which works great by the way.

Once you have your heart rate, she then advises that you add an estimate factor to it based on your fitness level:

Poor shape = 55
Average shape = 65
Excellent shape = 75

You then take 70% 80% of this number to get your fat-burning target heart rate.

My results from the step test were:

144 bpm at the end of 3 minutes
144 + 65 (assume average shape) = 209 bpm
.70 * 209 = 146 bpm (target fat-burning heart rate)

80% would be 167 bpm, which quite frankly I think would kill me. She advises not to go over 90%. Dont worry Sally, theres no chance of that happening!

Please be very careful when performing this test as well as calculating your sub-max heart rate. As you can see, this number will most likely be substantially higher than the old method:

200 49 = 171 bpm
.70 * 171 = 120 bpm

What it looks like to me is that this sub-max method actually puts your fat-burning heart rate closer to your cardio-conditioning heart rate derived with the old method. This seems to make sense. Highly conditioned athletes in sports such as basketball usually arent carry around a lot of body fat!

So if you feel that your training and conditioning are at an intermediate to advanced level, you may want to take up the intensity of your workouts and see if the fat starts to melt away -- like I do on a hot summer evening while playing tennis!

More is Not Better - Better Is Better!

Training is a great thing so it is easy to see why so many fall into the all too common 'more is better' trap. Like with many things in life, training should focus on quality over quantity. Your goal is not to train constantly more - not longer, not more frequently. Your focus is to improve your training - to increase your intensity by doing more and better in the time you have.

The fact of the matter is that marathon weight training workouts make no physiological sense. They work completely against how your body is designed to function in terms of packing on muscle. There is a good reason for keeping your workouts no longer than 45 minutes to an hour. Quite simply your testosterone levels begin to drop off dramatically after 45 minutes meaning that your output after this time is probably not going to be at the level required to stimulate new growth but rather is simply going to tax your body and eat into your recovery capacity. This means that your body will need to spend a great deal more resources repairing itself to where it was, an equilibrium level, leaving LESS to actually put towards NEW growth. Whilst training does tear down muscle fibres so they adapt and grow stronger, it is only a means to an end. If you are not drinking enough water, you are wasting your time

I cannot emphasize this enough, I have tried this weight loss thing 3 times over the past two years and the only time I noticed a difference was when I began consuming a lot of water. I have gone as far as to run 3-4 miles a day and eat cabbage for lunch and had limited results, but now I maintain a balanced diet and have lost more weight than ever because I drink at least a gallon of water every day.

The general idea is to drink an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, at first it will seem like a lot at first and you will be running to the bathroom every 15 minutes but you are giving your body what it needs. When your body feels as if it is not getting enough water it will store the little bit it does get, that is where those love handles come from. Then the liver has to kick in and help the kidneys rather than its function of metabolizing the body and you are not burning off the food you consume like you should. So do yourself a favor, drink more water!

Working out is useless if you are not enjoying yourself, there are a plethora of activities that you can do to keep yourself in shape. I personally cannot STAND running on treadmills so I only run outdoors. I enjoy lifting weights because of the feeling and the confidence I get from the results but lets take it a step further; If there is a sport you enjoy then there is no better workout, I am a football junkie and since I never played I figured hey.. why not join a flag football league and see what I can really do?

The result: I have lost 5lbs since I started the league, 5lbs that I have been struggling to get rid of and I feel like I am in high school all over again.

It's okay to use your Imagination
As pathetic as this may sound, when I work out in my mind I am training for the NFL, I even know what position I am training for. (running back) It may sound dumb but it makes me train hard and keeps me motivated. Figure out what motivates you, is it that guy or girl at work that you would like to notice you? Take it 88 yards to the end zone like Reggie Bush? Explode to the basket and finish like Lebron James? Forget reality, use your mind and let that motivate you and I guarantee you will be satisfied with the results.

You do not have to be a Nutrition Nazi
As I stated before I was eating cabbage for lunch, barely taking in 1200 calories a day and running miles.. I was hurting my weight loss goals more than I was achieving them. Not only does this work against you but its unhealthy and just plain stupid.

What do I do now that allowed me to lose 25lbs? I eat realistically, there is no way I could maintain a 1200 calorie diet over a long period of time. Now I eat lean meats high in protein such as grilled or baked chicken and periodically Salmon. (hey I am running a business here) Some days I eat more than others, I basically listen to what my body tells me and if I over eat then I know I need to work out that much harder. About every week or two I splurge and may eat an entire pizza or a big dinner and strangely my body responds positively.. it loves it and in a day or so I burn it off plus some. A couple of other tips on nutrition:

Do not eat after 7pm - your metabolism slows down significantly later in the evening

High Protein Diet - It works, I do not know why but it just does so take my word for it.

Breakfast, Never Skip it - Never EVER EVER skip breakfast! I just said your metabolism slows down significantly later in the day, well if you skip breakfast it will be that slow from the beginning of the day.

Sugar, cut it out! - Replace soda and Fruit Juice with water, you will cut your caloric intake significantly, put the sweets down and if you must have it then snack on fruits like Strawberries, Grapes, Bananas, etc.

Fried Foods - I'll keep it simple, do not touch them. If you eat out a lot avoid the french fries.

Even worse, sometimes they'll start a weight loss program and half way through it, realize that it's the wrong program for them for a variety of reasons. This article will hopefully prepare you for starting a weight loss routine in a proper manner so that you're not scrambling for things down the road. Hopefully, after reading this, you won't have that problem.

The first thing you need to understand when starting a weight loss program is that not all weight loss programs are the same. There are many different methods for losing weight. There's diet, exercise, drugs or any combination of these things. Each routine or method that you choose is going to have different requirements.

For example, let's say you decide that you're going to get this new at home yoga program. Well, before you send away for that package, make sure that you have the proper items needed to carry it out. For one thing, most of these programs now come on DVD. Well, guess what? If you don't have a DVD player you better either plan to go out and get one or choose another option.

What about weight loss programs that require specific diets? Are you sure you don't have any food allergies or intolerance? If not, you better get those things tested. The last thing you want to do is start on a diet and find out that the food you're required to eat doesn't sit well with your digestive system.

What about if you decided that you wanted to take diet pills? It would probably be a good idea to check with your doctor first to find out what the potential dangers of diet pills are, and believe me, the dangers are quite real. You doctor might determine that diet pills are not the best course of action for you. For that matter, you shouldn't go on any diet plan without first checking with your physician first. As much as I'm not the biggest fan of the medical profession with the way they give our prescriptions like candy, there are times when it's a good idea to talk to a doctor.

You also want to make sure that you're physically capable of handling the diet plan that you've chosen, especially if you decide to go the exercise route. If you've been sitting behind a desk for the last 25 years and haven't exercised since you graduated high school, you might want to take it slow when it comes to hitting that treadmill. You've probably got muscles that haven't been used in years.

The bottom line is this. You can't just jump into a diet program, no matter what kind it is. You need to make sure that you're fully prepared for whatever plan it is that you choose and that your body has a better than even chance of surviving the routine.

In other words, use your head before you start using the other parts of your body.

The truth is that calorie shifting isn't a scam. It's a dependable weight loss method. It doesn't work for everyone. No diet plan works for all the people. Some people will be disappointed by it. But for many people, calorie shifting will be just the thing that they'll need to jump start their weight loss efforts.
